This symbol of hope and faith in victory is without doubt one of the most popular French emblems. Although the origin of the cross of Lorraine seems to date back to the 4th century, its history is fascinating. From Jerusalem to Constantinople, from Anjou to Lorraine. In 1670 Father Jaques Marquette established a mission for Huron Indians on Mackinac Island. French Jesuit missionaries and settlers to the New World carried the Cross of Lorraine c. 1750-1810. The symbol was said to have helped the missionaries to convert the native people they encountered, because the two-armed cross resembled existing in local imagery. Often being compared to a dragon fly.
The dragonfly is common to see while on the island, fluttering between bike riders or found grazing wildflowers. Dragonfly's can be a symbol of self that comes with maturity. They can symbolize going past self-created illusions that limit our growth and ability to change.
This handmade piece was made by Mackinac Island silversmith, Frank Bloswick.
